Sending soon? Check the CAD to NGN rate before you start.

When you send money, you want to know who you are dealing with. This page answers that. It shows what FINTRAC registration means, how you can check our number yourself, and what we and you can do to keep a transfer safe.

We cannot promise that nothing will ever go wrong. No provider can. We can show you what we do, so you can decide.

Who runs SendCowris

SendCowris is run by Cowris Technologies. We help people send money between Canada and Nigeria.

What is FINTRAC?

FINTRAC is Canada's financial intelligence agency. It oversees businesses that move money, to help stop money laundering and the funding of crime.

A business that sends money for other people in Canada must register with FINTRAC as a money services business (MSB). You can search for registered businesses in the public MSB registry on the FINTRAC website.

Our registration

Cowris Technologies is registered with FINTRAC as a money services business. Our MSB registration number is N300001045.

You do not need to take our word for it. Check it yourself:

  1. Go to the FINTRAC website and find the Money Services Business registry.
  2. Type "Cowris" in the filter box.
  3. Look for the entry with the number N300001045. Check that its status says Registered.

The registry changes. Check it on the day you read this page.

What registration does not mean

Registration is a legal requirement. It is not an approval, and it is not an endorsement. FINTRAC does not tell you that a business is good or safe. So registration is a first check, not the last one.

Use the other checks too. See how to choose a way to send money to Nigeria: 6 things to check.

What we do

  • We check who you are. Before your first transfer, you verify your identity once. You scan a government photo ID and take a selfie. A partner called Didit runs the check. The app says it takes about 3 minutes.
  • We show you the numbers first. Before you confirm, you see what you pay, what your recipient gets and the rate.
  • We show the recipient's account name. When you enter a Nigerian bank account, the app shows the name on the account, so you can check it.
  • We match each payment to one transfer. You paste a transfer code into your e-Transfer message. This ties your payment to your transfer.
  • We show every step. In the Transactions tab you see: Waiting for your payment, Payment received, Sending to recipient, Completed.
  • We keep records. We keep identity and transaction records for the time the law asks.
  • We do not ask for your secrets. We will never ask you for your password, your PIN or a code we send you, by phone, text, email or chat.

What you can do

  • Pay from your own bank account. Use your own account, in your own name.
  • Check the account name before you pay. This stops most mistakes.
  • Keep your password private. Use a long password that you do not use anywhere else.
  • Type codes only in the app or on send.cowris.com.
  • Be careful with links in messages. When in doubt, open the app yourself.
  • Check your transfer. Open Transactions after you pay.
  • Ask first. If something feels wrong, write to us before you pay.

For common scams and warning signs, read how to spot a fake transfer or payment scam.

What to do if something goes wrong

Write to help@cowris.com. Include:

  • your name and the email on your account,
  • your transfer code,
  • the amount and the currency,
  • a screenshot of your payment or the error.

Do not send your password, your PIN or the codes we email or text you. Do not pay a second time for the same transfer.

You can also reach us in the app: open Account, then Help & Support.

What a transfer looks like

Here is the path of a transfer from Canada to Nigeria, so you know what to expect.

  1. You verify your identity once, before your first transfer.
  2. You enter the amount. The app shows what you pay, what your recipient gets and the rate.
  3. You enter your recipient's Nigerian bank account. The app shows the name on the account. Check it.
  4. You pay by Interac e-Transfer and paste your transfer code into the message.
  5. You follow the steps in the Transactions tab: Waiting for your payment, Payment received, Sending to recipient, Completed.

If a step looks different from this, stop and write to us at help@cowris.com before you pay.
